Lincoln Avenue Academy strives to become a community resource, to recruit business partners and collaborate with a variety of community members. Unlike neighborhood schools in which students live in the surrounding area, Lincoln faces a unique challenge of students arriving from all parts of the city. As a high performing school, our resources are limited, therefore increasing the need for outside collaboration.

Our school population is diverse, as is the neighborhood in which we are located. Therefore, it is important to educate our students about and celebrate our diversity. Each month a multicultural presentation features another culture that represents our student population. The multicultural celebrations include presentations of a variety of cultural aspects such as dance, music, art, inventions, food, and clothing. While some presenters are recruited from community organizations and businesses, some are set up by parents of Lincoln students.  Each February, Lincoln hosts the Black History Month celebration. Throughout the month of February, our TV news show features famous African Americans. Numerous class activities are built around contributions of African Americans to our society. The month long observance culminates in an assembly in which prominent African Americans from the community speak to students.

Reaching our community, Lincoln has developed programs that improve students understanding of career opportunities. The Enhancement Hour program is a unique opportunity for 5th Graders at Lincoln Avenue Academy to learn about various careers, particularly in science and technology. Various professionals speak to students and bring with them examples of their work. Students choose their “career path” from five choices.  Business partnerships are developed to provide additional resources and opportunities for our students. While some companies provide supplies or guest speakers, Lincoln always seeks long term partners for the extension of curricular standards.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, this service learning project is a culmination of weeks of project based learning in our 4th grade social studies clasroom. Applying academic and 21st century skills to tackle the pressing community issue, students explore and actively participate in every step of design and implementation of this project. Students and their families dedicate their MLK day to helping elderly and disabled people in our community with home and yard maintenance. This year our program will expand to include the food bank component where members of the community can request supplies for their families.
